Projects: Requiring the Latest App Version (Blocking the Legacy App)
To make an employee use the latest version of the SCREENish tracking app, open PROJECTS, switch to the Assign Projects to Employee(s) tab and press Require latest app in the Tracking App column next to their name. From that moment the old (legacy) app is refused when that employee signs in, and the app tells them where to download the current version. To require it from everyone at once, press Require latest app for the whole team above the table.
Current app and legacy app
There are two generations of the desktop time tracking app:
- Current — version 1.9 and newer. On Windows this is the Official version Windows download for Windows 10 and 11; on macOS it is the Official App MacOS universal build. It keeps itself up to date, and Face Verification, screenshot privacy blurring and Capture All Monitors need it.
- Legacy — versions before 1.9, the Legacy version Windows installer kept for Windows 7 and 8, and the older macOS builds. An outdated legacy app keeps working unless you require the latest app.
The Tracking App column
The column shows, for each employee, the app they last signed in with: the platform and version with a legacy or current label, or No app sign-in seen if they have never used the desktop app. Below it:
- Require latest app — refuses the legacy app for this employee. The column then reads Legacy app refused at sign-in.
- Allow legacy app — lets this employee sign in with the old version again.
- Require latest app for the whole team (above the table) — applies the requirement to every active employee at once. The link under it, Allow the legacy app for the whole team, lifts it for everyone.
What the employee sees
Nothing changes for employees already on the current app or on the Chrome extension. An employee on the legacy app is refused at their next sign-in with the message This app version is no longer allowed by your employer. Please install the latest SCREENish app: sign in at www.screenish.com and open Downloads. A session that is already running is not interrupted; the app signs in again about once an hour, so the requirement takes effect within the hour. Point them to App Sign-In: "This app version is no longer allowed by your employer" for the update steps.
Delegated managers with access to the Projects page have the same buttons. The requirement is per employee and per employer: it never affects the same person's work for another company.
